The 2012 Western Region 4-H Science Academy was held March 26-28, 2012 at UC Davis. Funded by the Noyce Foundation, the Academy brought together 4-H professional faculty and staff from the thirteen western states in a three-day summit. The goal of the Academy was to build the capacity of state and local 4-H faculty and staff to deliver high quality, sustainable, nonformal 4-H science education programs.

The 4-H Science Initiative was started in 2008 to strengthen 4-H programs to improve youth science literacy. The Academy will be an opportunity to share, network, and improve 4-H’s programs in animal science, ecosystems and natural resources, engineering, and foods and nutrition through increased capacity to develop curricula, evaluate program outcomes and impacts, train volunteer educators, and raise funds.

Over seventy-five Land Grant University Extension faculty from the thirteen Western States are involved with this multi-state effort. The Western Region includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, West Pacific Islands, and Wyoming.

GOALS
The goal of the Western Region 4-H Science Academy is to build the capacity of state and local 4-H faculty, staff, and volunteers to offer high quality, sustainable 4-H Science programs by helping states:

Design, implement, evaluate and sustain 4-H Science programs
Develop strategies to secure funds and other resources to support 4-H Science at the state and local levels
Assist Land-grant Universities and counties with developing and refining their 4-H Science Plans of Action
Identify additional training and resources needed to support the 4-H Science Mission Mandate

OBJECTIVES
Major objectives of the regional academies include:

Achieve the outcomes of the National 4-H Science Initiative at the state and local levels.
Allow regions to design programs that address specific needs within their regions.
