WAS President, Melanie Kirby, is firming up a very ambitious and varied conference program schedule. Topics likely will include:
(1) reports on bee studies from many formal research institutions
(2) honey bee genetics and breeding, spanning techniques used by commercial queen breeders, many local and regional breeding programs, and a successful natural selection approach practiced in France
(3) colony management practices and so-called "alternative" methods of beekeeping, including equipment and colony management practices of the region that differ from classic textbook descriptions, especially as they relate to the varied geographical climates of the regions
(4) pollination as practiced by regional beekeepers and involving alternative pollinator species
(5) community outreach and education as provided by many southwestern beekeeping organizations
(6) use of hive products for human health
A number of potential local, regional, and national exhibitors have been contacted. Normally, beverage breaks are conducted in the exhibits room, so that participants can circulate among the vendors to examine their products.
