Fig Rust

Fig rust is a fungus-caused disease, and the literature I have indicates that fig rust is “rare” in California.

Control of rust on figs is going to be difficult. Very few good fungicides are registered for use on figs. In fact, my references list only two.In the winter when the tree(s) goes dormant, rake up and destroy all infected leaves. Remove all residual fruit and destroy it. Also apply a dormant cleanup spray to the bare limbs and twigs. Next spring, about the time when the first leaves mature (June?), apply a preventive spray. Spray again 14 days later. These sprays will hopefully prevent establishment (infection) of the rust fungus. If you see the symptoms of rust beginning, spray again immediately.
