Aphids on Citrus

There are several species of aphids that will infest citrus on the Central Coast. The cotton/melon aphid, Aphis gossypii feed on the underside of young leaves, causing curling and distortion. To control infestations of aphids, spray the infested foliage (no need to spray the whole tree). Coverage is important, so make sure all the infested foliage is covered. Do not spray citrus trees with oil when hot weather (85-90ºF on the Central Coast) is expected. If you use horticultural oil, I suggest you spray in the evening when the air is cool and calm. Read the product label and follow the directions for best results.
