Learning More/Fun Things to Do
This page provides additional activities and links so that you can learn more about gardening (and Victory Gardens), the environment, and food systems by doing fun and challenging things.
Teachers call this kind of stuff curriculum, which is a Latin word for "course" or "running" (and if you tell a teacher this, they'll be completely impressed).
Anyway, it's fun stuff that has been reviewed by at least one sixth-grader who rates it on the highly scientific "carrot scale"...one carrot means our rater thinks "it's not so great" (and VictoryGrower probably shouldn't have included it); five carrots means it absolutely rocks. You can figure out the rest.
ITEM ONE: Ohio Historical Memory Site: contains a lot of information about life in American during WWII (historians call this the "homefront"). It's a pretty cool format, because it looks like a scrapbook, and you can click on different photos for activities. Topics include Victory Gardens, scrap drives, and a bunch of things youth did to help the war effort. You can learn how to make a Victory Garden poster, etc. Lots of original documents to download; they're cool to read and look at. You'll learn a lot and it's fun. 4 carrots
