UC DAVIS Science and Society

Science and Society (SAS) is an academic program designed to offer students throughout the campus the opportunity to discover the interdisciplinary connections that link the biological, physical, and social sciences with societal issues and cultural discourses. Course work examines discovery processes in relation to societal values, public policy, and ethics, including issues associated with cultural diversity. The SAS program is not a major, rather it is designed as a General Education program. The SAS program provides a General Education framework by:

1. Offering a societal context for science topics for science majors early in their university experience.

2. Promoting scientific literacy among non-science majors.

Currently, the program offers 21 lecture courses and 4 seminar classes. Students can receive a minor in science and society. Special programs housed within the SAS program include Career Discovery Groups and the Contemporary Leadership minor.
