New vegetable raised beds

New redwood raised beds will greet the public at the February 25 Open Garden event at the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center. Nine recently constructed beds can be viewed up close and attendees are encouraged to ask Master Gardeners how they were built, the type of soil used to fill each bed, irrigation, planting plans and any other questions concerning growing vegetables in the home garden.

Eight of the new beds are 20 feet long, 4 feet wide and 18 inches deep. A smaller, easy-access bed is 2 feet in depth to allow for less bending and reaching to accommodate people with disabilities, back problems and seniors. The raised beds were finished earlier this month and were a project of Scout Troop 107, with help from the Master Gardeners who tend the vegetable demonstration garden.

All of the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center demonstration gardens will be open and staffed with Master Gardeners during the Open Garden. While Master Gardeners are conducting seasonal chores in some of the gardens the public is encouraged to roam and ask questions.
