In the orchard
Codling moth is a common insect pest in the Sacramento area on apples, pears, Asian pears, and English walnuts. Read about how to control this pest here. See how Master Gardeners at the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center demonstration orchard manage the pests.
Chopping the greens and browns into 2-inch pieces will speed up the composting process. Keep the pile as moist as a wrung out sponge; if you have ants, the pile may be too dry. If you're composting with worms, add more food--the worms are very active now. Learn more about composting here.
