Learning modules

These learning modules are designed to provide in-depth training on specific topics relating to soil fertility and irrigation management of horticultural crops. The modules offer online learning opportunities for agricultural professionals involved in horticultural crop management or consulting. Eventually, we hope the modules will be a convenient way to fulfill continuing education requirement for holders of Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) certification.

Drip irrigation scheduling of processing tomatoes (no credit)
This module explains the practical aspects of drip irrigation management. Aspects covered include the use of evapotranspiration (ET) data to calculate irrigation requirement, soil moisture monitoring and end-of-season management for fruit quality improvement.

Efficient phosphorus management for vegetable production (no credit)
This module describes the agronomic and environmental aspects of phosphorus management in vegetable production. Topics include soil and plant tissue testing for P status, crop P requirements, the movement of soil P into the environment, and management practices for water quality protection.

Improving fertilizer management in coastal lettuce production (no credit)
This module describes the factors governing the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilization requirements for lettuce production.  The environmental fate of applied fertilizers, and management practices to reduce environmental water quality impacts are also covered.

This module outlines the current state of environmental water quality in coastal vegetable production areas, and describes irrigation, nutrient management and conservation practices that can limit environmental impact from vegetable production.

Managing calcium in vegetable crop production (no credit)
This module explains the causes and potential remedies for common calcium-related disorders of vegetable crops such as blossom end rot of tomato and tipburn of lettuce.  Soil calcium availability, calcium fertilization and cultural practices to minimize calcium disorders are covered in detail.

Managing fertility in drip-irrigated processing tomatoes (CCA credit offered)
This module outlines the fundamentals of fertilizer management for drip-irrigated processing tomato production. Aspects covered include soil fertility testing, fertigation scheduling and monitoring of crop nutrient status.
