In April 2010, a committed group of Master Gardeners began the Bishop Community Garden. The project has two goals: to create a demonstration garden to serve as an educational tool for locals to learn about best practices for gardening; and to provide space for local residents to garden, allowing them to grow fresh local foods and promote a healthy community. Working with the City of Bishop to secure the space in the Bishop City Park-- the group received approval from Bishop City Council, created the design, and raised the funds to begin the project. In April 2011, the group broke ground and with the help of community members and businesses the irrigation was installed, the soil was amended, and much more, to prepare for the first season. In May 2011, the community garden accepted applications from local residents. Over 30 individual plots were actively gardened for the season. Every month a workshop or demonstration was presented to the gardeners and the general public taught by local Master Gardeners and other community experts.
Who maintains and funds the Bishop Community Garden?
The demonstration garden is maintained by Master Gardeners, and the individual plots are maintained by local residents. Local UCCE Master Gardeners are active in fundraising (events, grant proposals, etc.) to support these efforts.

The Bishop Community Garden is located on approximately ½ an acre in the southeast corner of the Bishop City Park (north of Sterling Heights).
Sounds great! What do I do if I want a plot for the upcoming season?
Applications will be available in the spring. Versions in Spanish and in English are available for download at the Bishop Community Gardens website. You may also pick up a hard copy at the Master Gardener office in Bishop.
I already have my own garden. Can I still participate in Bishop Community Garden activities?
Of course! In the spring, summer, and fall, the Bishop Community Garden is the site of classes taught by Master Gardeners and other local gardeners on gardening issues specific to the Eastern Sierra. We also hold community workdays and social events to celebrate the local bounty. Stay tuned for a schedule of upcoming classes and events.
I think the Community Garden is a great idea, and I’d like to volunteer my services. What kinds of things do you need help with?
Whether you are interested in working directly with the public or behind the scenes, there are many opportunities to make a difference in our community. We are looking for people with all kinds of skills, including administration, carpentry, construction, landscaping, gardening expertise, design (i.e. to create signage and educational materials) and more. All volunteers will have the satisfaction of knowing their commitment will have a tremendous and permanent impact on our community. Give us a call if you are interested in volunteering.
Does the Bishop Community Garden have a wishlist?
Thanks for asking! If you have soil, manure, or compost, please let us know. Also, the use of any tools (as a loan or a gift) is always appreciated.
