Weinberger and F.N. Harmon of the USDA-ARS in Fresno, California. Formerly known and tested as F32-137, the cultivar resulted from the cross of (Cardinal x Thompson Seedless) x (Red Malaga x Tifafihi Ahmer) x (Muscat of Alexandria x Thompson Seedless) made in 1961. The cultivar produces berries that are small, round, firm and crisp. Clusters are conical in shape, medium in size and ripen in early July. The berries respond extremely well to girdling and gibberellin treatment. One of the early grape growers to recognize the potential of Flame Seedless was John J. Kovacevich of Arvin, California. Since its introduction in 1973, Flame Seedless has become one of the most widely planted and recognized grape cultivars in the California table grape industry with over 9,300 hectares in commercial production.
