<description><![CDATA[The Request for Proposals for the 2013 WBUG program is in the Federal Register. It looks like the solicitation is similar to last years with a focus on later stage projects designed to convert wood biomass to energy products (heat, electricity, biogas, etc.). The deadline for proposals is April 8.

Peter is replacing Gareth Mayhead, who left the group this past fall to return to new opportunities in his homeland of Wales. Peter developed expertise in  forest, woody biomass, and bioenergy issues in both his dissertation and Post-graduate research at the University of California Davis where he received a doctorate from the Geography Graduate Group in June of 2011.

<title> 2012 Woody Biomass Grants Announced</title>      
<description><![CDATA[<a href="http://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=8039&utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=RSS&utm_campaign=RSS%2BFeed"><img src="http://ucanr.edu/blogs/WoodyBiomass/blogfiles/12217small.png" align="left" style="border:0"></a>The U.S. Forest Service announced on July 26th the funding of $4 million in grants to be used for wood-to-energy projects. These grants will go towards helping 20 businesses create jobs and local revenue. This $4 million in grants is part of more than $36 million awarded by USDA FS since 2005 in support of developing uses for woody biomass. The woody biomass that so often in the western U.S. becomes wildfire fuel if left unmanaged.

<title> Buena Vista Power Plant and Biomass to Electricity Factsheet</title>

<title> Woody Biomass Feasibility Studies Available</title>

<title> Woody Biomass Utilization Grants Announced</title>

California has a huge hardwood resource that is mostly underutilized.&#xa0; For example, in the redwood growing regions tanoak is regarded as a &quot;weed&quot; despite the fact that it can be cut into beautiful and versatile lumber products.

<title> Wood Chips as an Air Filtration Media</title>

<title> Eureka and Yreka Workshops</title>

<description><![CDATA[The video below shows a unique Dutch Dragon mobile in-woods chipper operating on California Tahoe Conservancy urban lots in South Lake Tahoe in early July.&#xa0; The equipment was purchased by David Mercer of Cross Check Services LLC in order to better process woody biomass from fuels reduction projects in the Tahoe basin.&#xa0; This is the only Dutch Dragon chipper in the USA.&#xa0;

<description><![CDATA[A USDA press release from last week finally makes the announcement that&#xa0;$4.2 million in grants&#xa0;has been awarded to&#xa0;17 small businesses and community groups across the country.&#xa0; Five of the beneficiaries are California companies who did an excellent job of putting together high quality projects.&#xa0; The recipients were chosen from 109 applications.

<title> ARRA Biomass Projects</title>

Service American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds.  The announcement by Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan concerns 30 projects valued at approximtately $57m.  The projects are categorized into biomass utilization and wood-to-energy.  California is shown to have 2 projects, both in the Northwest part of the state, with a combined total value of $4,748,000. <title> Forest Service ARRA Projects</title>      
<description><![CDATA[<a href="http://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=1348&utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=RSS&utm_campaign=RSS%2BFeed"><img src="http://ucanr.edu/blogs/WoodyBiomass/blogfiles/1847small.png" align="left" style="border:0"></a>Today Agriculture Secretary Vilsack Announced American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Projects for Forest Road Maintenance and Associated Watershed and Ecosystem Restoration. Four projects in California with a total value of $24.9m are identified in the $228m allocated. 
The Forest Service also posted an updated list of projects that have been funded through ARRA on its website. <title> Tulare Workshop</title>

About one third of the audience came from Sierra and Sequoia National Forests with representatives from local industry and the community also in attendance. 
The first day focused on introducing the tool of Stewardship Contracting including its development and authorities. We concluded with introductions to woody biomass utilization.

<title> SPI to Close Quincy Small Log Sawmill</title>      
<description><![CDATA[SPI announced yesterday that they will be closing their Quincy small log sawmill on May 4 2009.  This will result in the loss of 150 jobs.  The company blames continued litigation against Forest Service projects and the downturn in the lumber market for the closure.
This represents a significant loss of processing capacity in Northern California and removes a market for the small diameter logs that come from restoration projects. <title> Restrictions on the Use of Wood Stoves</title>

Eight Spare the Air days have already been declared by the Bay Area Air Quaility Managment District (BAAQMD) this winter which means that the burning of wood in fireplaces or stoves is illegal in order to recude the amount of particulate matter in the air.  
Particulate matter (PM) are very small partciles suspended in the air. The article looks at influences, including climate change, on wildfires.  With over 1.4 million acres of forest burning in California in 2008 the article is timely.  It shows that severe wildfires may continue to become more frequent and severe meaning destruction of homes and ecosystems and massive air pollution.

<title> New Renewable Portfolio Standard Target</title>      
<description><![CDATA[<a href="http://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=822&utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=RSS&utm_campaign=RSS%2BFeed"><img src="http://ucanr.edu/blogs/WoodyBiomass/blogfiles/1065small.jpg" align="left" style="border:0"></a>On Monday, this week, Governor Schwarzenegger signed Executive Order # S-14-08 that raises California&apos;s renewable energy goals to 33% by 2020.  The order expands the state&apos;s current Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS).  Originally the RPS (SB 1078) required sellers to serve 20% of their load with electricity from renewable sources by 2017.  This was modified by SB 107 in 2006 to 20% by 2010. The sale, by Lee and Man, is apparently part of a restructuring arrangement that will allow the mill to clear debt to suppliers.  It recently curtailed operations due to reduced demand (and lower prices) in global pulp markets. <title> Fluidyne Gasifier Flare Video</title>

The flare is after cooling and bag filtration of the gas produced from wood chips.  It is shown flaring at night and also during the day (it is harder to see the flare during daylight).   
This project is located in California and will demonstrate electricity generation from the gas using an internal combustion engine.  The system will be connected to the electricity grid. <title> Increasing Demand for Pellet Stoves?</title>

<title> Woody Biomass Utilization Grants</title>      
<description><![CDATA[Last year there were five successful applications for Forest Service Woody Biomass Utilization Grants totalling $1,245,000 for California and Oregon projects.  Further information on these projects is at the USDA News Center.
If the program runs in 2009 the request for proposals for will likely be announced in September.  Watch this space for the RFP information.  Please contact us if you have project ideas or questions about this grant program.
