StumbleUponWant to Help Create a Beautiful Bench in the Shields Oak Grove?

DAVIS--The UC Davis Art/Science Fusion Program, co-founded and co-directed by Diane Ullman and Donna Billick, will sponsor a seven-week community outreach project that will result in a 50-foot tiled concrete bench at the entrance to the Peter J. Shields Oak Grove on Garrod Drive.
Ullman, professor and former chair of the UC Davis Department of Entomology and associate dean for undergraduate academic programs in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, and Billick, a self-described “rock artist,” will lead the project every Tuesday night, beginning Oct. 4 and continuing through Nov. 15 in Rooms 126 and 12 of the Environmental Horticulture Building.
The Environmental Horticulture Building, located on Arboretum Drive, is near the Buehler Alumni and Visitors’ Center. Rooms 126 and 128 are also known as “The Labudio” (lab/studio).
The tile will showcase the life cycle of an English oak. Each participant may select an image of a wildflower, mushroom, insect, bird or mammal for the tile. Ullman and Billick said the ceramic bench will be part of an outdoor classroom and gathering spot for tours of the arboretum’s nationally recognized oak collection.

More than 80 kinds of oaks are found in the 10-acre Peter J. Shields Oak Grove.
