California's climate is ideal for the growth of aquatic weeds, which are a perennial problem for fish, wildlife, irrigation, and municipal water systems, not to mention the numerous small private lakes and ponds that become clogged with weeds and anaerobic when the weeds die. The more recent invasion of foreign weeds also has become a critical issue. An extension specialist assigned to this specific topic would be in great demand and would provide important research and service to both private parties and public managers.
