California vegetable production continues to increase in complexity. Growers are under extreme pressure to keep production costs low. At the same time, they must meet a growing list of regulatory requirements for food safety, air quality, water quality, etc., all of which add costs or have a negative impact on productivity. A vegetable crops specialist who can help to develop economically viable solutions to our most timely issues, particularly water quality, would have the full support of organizations such as our own, the CA Leafy Greens Research Board.

The Grower-Shipper Association of Central California, representing some 300 growers on the Central Coast, strongly urges approval of this position. There has never been a greater need for university collaboration in developing solutions for the many complex issues facing vegetable growers in California. U.C. has been actively involved in identifying and quantifying such issues as nitrate contamination in groundwater. Now it's time to hire good people to work with the industry to develop technologies to ensure the strength and sustainability of California agriculture.

With increasingly complex pest issues and severe water quality regulations being put into place, it is crtically important that the University take a leadership role in these issues and that a CE position in Vegetable Production is funded.
