Heartbleed bug

A lot has been written of the Heartbleed bug, and server administrators are diligently patching servers. As security experts have had time to explore the bug and its effect, they are concluding the threat is not as bad as first thought. However, changing your password/passphrase is a good idea by any account.

VP announces 3% raise for academics and staff for FY 2014-15

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to inform you that at the direction of President Janet Napolitano, the University is making plans to implement a systemwide salary increase program for policy-covered (non-represented) career staff employees and faculty/academics for the 2014-15 fiscal year.

Non-represented staff employees

Effective July 2014, ANR non-represented career staff employees, excluding student employees, will receive a three (3) percent across the board salary increase, subject to the criteria set out in the implementation guidelines that will be communicated to you in the near future. Please review the guidelines for further information. 

The effective date of the increase for exempt staff employees will be July 1, 2014. For staff employees on a biweekly pay cycle, the effective date of the increase will be in the first July biweekly pay cycle.

Academic employees

The president has also authorized a three (3) percent salary program for academic personnel for academic year 2014-15. Please review the forthcoming guidelines for further information.

UCOP conducts survey regarding disability status

As a result of recent changes to federal regulations, all federal government contractors are now required to regularly survey employees regarding their disability status. The regulatory change is intended to address a substantial lag in the employment rate of individuals with disabilities that persists despite technological advancements that have made it possible for people with disabilities to apply for and successfully perform a broad array of jobs. 

All University of California employees will soon receive an email asking them to complete a brief, voluntary survey about their disability status. You may have already received the email because some were sent last week.

UC has hired VR Election Service (VRES) to administer the survey. The email will come from the following address: The email will also include a unique PIN that VRES has assigned to each employee. To respond to the survey, you must enter the PIN and the month and date of your birth to authenticate your identity.  UC will use the collected data to assess employment practices and recruitment efforts. The collected information will remain confidential.

Help UCCE celebrate centennial with May 8 Day of Science and Service

Our May 8 Day of Science and Service is quickly approaching. Help us create buzz!

How can you participate? I'm so glad you asked!

  1. Plan a local activity on your campus, REC or county office. Coordinate a community pollinator walk, visit a local school and teach about water conservation, or have an open house at your demonstration garden and add it to our California food map. Watch our webinar to get more ideas:
  1. Have kids or work at a school? Reach out to teachers, or principals, and have them do a classroom activity related to one of our questions. Download our lesson plans to share with them, under “Partner Outreach” at
  1. Reach out to your local partners and networks. Spread the word! We're relying on you to conduct outreach at the local level. Use our partner letters, press release, postcards and fact sheets to help in your outreach efforts.

Join April 29 town hall to discuss ANR Work Environment Assessment

Join VP Barbara Allen-Diaz and AVP Bill Frost for a one-hour town hall on Tuesday, April 29, at 9 a.m. to discuss the UC ANR Work Environment Assessment.

UC recently released the results of a systemwide survey of all faculty, students and staff on work environments and work-life issues. When asked about their work environment in UC ANR, 73 percent of the respondents said they were “very comfortable” or “comfortable.” However, there is cause for concern because 31 percent of respondents believed that they had personally experienced exclusionary conduct in some form, such as feeling intimidated, bullied or ignored.

“This is an area where we can, and we will, do better,” said Allen-Diaz. “It is something that we must prioritize and address together, as an organization.” 

The UC ANR Work Environment Assessment results are based on a 64 percent response rate from UC Cooperative Extension specialists and advisors and staff located around the state. However, these results do not include Agricultural Experiment Station faculty or Cooperative Extension specialists located on the Berkeley, Davis and Riverside campuses who received the campus survey or staff in Oakland who received the UC Office of the President survey.

“I want to hear from you,” said Allen-Diaz. “Please join me on April 29 and share your suggestions for ensuring a safe, supportive, inclusive and welcoming work environment for everyone.”
