2012 Woody Biomass Grants Announced
The U.S. Forest Service announced on July 26th the funding of $4 million in grants to be used for wood-to-energy projects. These grants will go towards helping 20 businesses create jobs and local revenue. This $4 million in grants is part of more than $36 million awarded by USDA FS since 2005 in support of developing uses for woody biomass. The woody biomass that so often in the western U.S. becomes wildfire fuel if left unmanaged.
Three California organizations were successful in receiving funding through the competitive grants process—Plumas Rural Services, CA Department of Forestry, and Yosemite/Sequoia Resource Conservation and Development Council.
- Plumas (Quincy, CA)- Restart 16-17 MW CHP plant in Plumas County (Loyalton Power Plant)
- Cal Fire (Modoc and Trinity County, CA)- 3.8 MM BTU annual thermal energy system for supplying heat to two Conservation Camps, Devil's Garden in Modoc County and Trinity River in Trinity County—both run by Cal-Fire.
- Yosemite/Sequoia (North Fork, CA)- Construct small scale 1 MW CHP system
