Early Detection and Monitoring
Initiating an early detection and monitoring program for your facility is a critical early step that you can take to prevent and reduce impacts from Eurasian Mussel infestations. The earlier you detect mussels or veligers, the easier it will be to eliminate or control the infestation.
In California, the Department of Fish and Game's Invasive Species Program provides training and support for groups interested in early detection and monitoring. The following CDFG documents provide protocols and data sheets for use in a monitorning program:
Surface Survey Monitoring Protocol
Surface Survey Datasheet
Artificial Substrate Monitoring Protocol
Veliger Monitoring Protocol
Martha Volkoff is the lead CDFG staff for Early Dectection and Monitoring. Please contact Martha at: (916) 651-8658 or mvolkoff@dfg.ca.gov for further information on this topic or training.
