<title> New pests can increase fire danger</title>      
<description><![CDATA[<a href="http://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=9380&utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=RSS&utm_campaign=RSS%2BFeed"><img src="http://ucanr.edu/blogs/Safelandscapes/blogfiles/14330small.jpg" align="left" style="border:0"></a>There&apos;s a new insect pest in Southern California, the Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB). This small ambrosia beetle spreads a fungal pest, and together they can kill trees in urban, suburban, and natural landscapes. The beetle has been found on over 200 species of tree, but there are 19 that have so far been found to host both the beetle and the fungus - these are known as reproductive hosts. <description><![CDATA[Several wildfires have been started by sparks thrown from mowers and other equipment being used to manage vegetation for fire safety. 
Make sure you are managing vegetation safely!
Mow/use power equipment on cool, humid days and in the cooler morning hours before 10:00 am. Don&apos;t use power equipment when it&apos;s windy, and a spark could get out of control. Make sure equipment has functioning spark arresters. Don&apos;t drive a hot vehicle onto dry grass.
