A vision for educational outreach

It has been said that education alone cannot change the world. But education, fueled by a genuine desire and love for the land and the life it supports, can inspire us to live in harmony with our resources in ways that are sustainable and sensitive to our environment.

In Mendocino County, as throughout the North Coast region, we have begun to lead the way in seeking ways to embrace healthier, simpler, more-balanced lifestyles. At the Hopland Research & Extension Center, we have a rich heritage of field research extending more than 60 years. Much of this research continues to inform ways in which we can better manage plant communities, wildlife, watersheds, soils, and other resources found in the Coast Range and in oak woodlands and grasslands throughout California. New knowledge developed at Hopland and at our sister UC Research & Extension Centers needs to be interpreted and shared widely; our new facility will allow that to happen in exciting new ways.

Starting at the local level, we will share strategies for managing natural resources in productive yet sensitive ways, which enrich the lives of citizens of California while sustaining values that will be passed along to new generations. Positive change that begins locally, here at Hopland, will ripple outward to our region, and into the world.
