| Project Summary |
Conservation easements to preserve cattle ranches in AZ and NM near Mexican border and grassbank. Grassbank is a concept in which grass on one ranch is made available to another rancher’s cattle in return for the conveyance of land-use easements prohibiting subdivision. The Malpai Borderlands Group holds the easements. This accomplishes conservation in two ways: one, the rancher's own grass resource is rested; two, his land will never be subdivided and developed.
A collaborative effort that is built around goals shared by neighbors within their community. The group originated as a series of informal discussions among ranching neighbors who recognized that a way of life, and a wild landscape, that they all loved was being threatened by spread of development and subdivision from nearby towns. |
