Perennial Crop Nurseries

The perennial crop nursery sector of the Pacific Area-Wide Pest Management Program for Methyl Bromide (MB) Alternatives has a primary focus on open-field production of deciduous tree, grapevine, and garden rose stock in California. This industry contributes over $200 million to the economy of the state and supplies over 60% of the total fruit, nut, and rose plants sold in the USA.

Perennial crop nursery stock is often sold as “bareroot” planting stock for commercial orchard and vineyard producers or for the wholesale market.

The perennial crop nursery industry produces “bareroot” plants for sale to commercial orchard and vineyard growers or into the wholesale nursery trade. In comparison with other fumigation-dependent industries, perennial nursery stock producers may face a more difficult transition to alternatives due to regulatory constraints and adoption of methyl bromide alternatives in California nurseries has been slow. A series of research and demonstration experiments were conducted to address the needs of this industry as a part of the Pacific Area-wide Pest Management Program for Integrated Methyl Bromide Alternatives Program from 2005-2011.
