<description><![CDATA[Youth development advocate and researcher Peter Benson of the Search Institute in Minnesota passed away on October 2 after a battle with cancer. Peter Benson wrote many books and articles about youth development, and helped to develop several important concepts within positive youth development, such as sparks and assets. <title> 4-H impact in 6 western states</title>      
<description><![CDATA[A new article in the Journal of Extension compares 4-H youth to other young people in six western states (MT, ID, UT, CO, NV, and NM). <description><![CDATA[This 2010 article in BMC Public Health is an evaluation of a health promotion project in the Girl Scouts youth development program. The authors randomized Girl Scout troops to intervention or control and trained troop leaders to implement physical activity and healthy eating policies. <description><![CDATA[The May 2011 issue of Evaluation &amp;amp; Program Planning includes an article on &quot;Ten Steps to Making Evaluation Matter.&quot; The article provides a ten step framework for the steps of best practice evaluation. The framework includes a full approach of the steps needed for full evaluation. This includes garnering a basic understanding of the program, identifying the program theory (effectively a logic model approach), evaluation design and implementation, and sustainability and impact.

<description><![CDATA[The President&apos;s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology have issued a new report, &quot;Prepare and Inspire: K-12 Education in Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math (STEM) for America&apos;s Future.&quot; The report calls for several steps to improve STEM education in the United States, including an increase in after-school programs that incorporate STEM projects. In particular, they hope to see more after-school programs for girls, African American, and Hispanic youth.
