In the lifestyle we have lived for the last twenty years at Busy Rural Family Farm we followed the examples of Helen & Scott Nearing. Helen & Scott Nearing were the authors of the "Living The Good Life" series of books first published in the 1930's, and they became important contributors to the back-to-the-land movement on their homesteading experiences in the 1970's. They created and lived sustainable principles and methodically set about living solutions to modern days problems. We are 80% food self-reliant from what we grow in our gardens, we plant intensively and in succession throughout our growing season. Central on our farm is our living and teaching examples of sustainability. Like the Nearings we planned and took things we do step-by-step and always paid-as-we-went. Also, like the Nearings, we are vegetarians. Our homestead garden has 50 raised beds, 23 of these have PVC cold frame foundations for the covers we use for extending growing season. Our drip irrigation system uses well water and has a back up gravity fed system from an uphill tank. Our gardens also includes 50 mostly young fruit trees with numerous blueberry and other soft fruits. For people who are drawn to volunteer at our farm we offer hands on experience in our food and energy self-reliant lifestyle. Our growing and volunteering seasons here begin April 1 and ends late-October. We provide volunteers with all the necessary tools and instructions in their use, and also provide private quarters and meals. The average working period per day would run four to six hours depending on how much work needs to get done during the time you volunteer with us. Qualification: The volunteer position requires patience, teamwork, cooperation and communication skills with the homesteaders. You will receive instructions gracefully
