Hilgardia ceased publication in 1995, but a limited supply of archival issues remains. California Agriculture now handles requests for back issues and other business items. Please contact Carol Lopez at calag@ucanr.edu

Portions of Hilgardia may be reprinted for scholarly purposes as long as credit is given to the original publication in Hilgardia, by volume, number and page, denoting copyright (in the relevant year) by the Regents of the University of California. Citations should follow established conventions and style.

Ira Condit’s Fig Monograph is the first completely digitized and downloadable Hilgardia.

Hilgardia scanning begins with $26,500 in donations

The HilgardiaProject, launched in April 2011 to bring the full text of the classic UC publication to the worldwide web, has received $26,500 in donations and pledges. The project's first phase — preparing the Wine and Grape Collection for posting online — is under way.

Aptara Inc., the digital publisher, is now scanning and digitizing the Wine and Grape Collection (58 Hilgardias published between 1925 and 1982) on subjects spanning winegrape physiology, favorable soil characteristics, sensory and chemical evaluation, and management of diseases and pests such as Pierce's Disease and sharpshooters that transmit it.

"Targeted support for this initial collection came from the Lodi Winegrape Commission, in acknowledgment of the tremendous importance of the monographs to the wine and grape industry today," said Deborah Golino, committee chair.

Why scan Hilgardia?

Hilgardia was the primary, technical publication of UC Agriculture and Natural Resources for 70 years.

Although production ceased in 1995, Hilgardia editions include classic research, findings which are still cornerstones of agricultural, environmental and nutritional understanding  today.

These publications of UC faculty are still frequently cited: (Hilgardia citation analysis). Once scanned and digitized, the entire work will be searchable and discoverable on the web, through XML metadata and a high resolution PDF of each numbered article.

The series was established in May 1925 and succeeded the Technical Paper series which ceased with issue No. 20 (April 1925). Hilgardia commemorates Dr. Eugene Woldemar Hilgard (1833-1916), founding director of the California Agricultural Experiment Station. Professor Hilgard also organized the Agriculture Department of the University of California.

Why is the Hilgardia Project important?

Despite classic content that is still cited and applied today, Hilgardia has virtually no presence on the web, and one-half of published issues (including the first 24 volumes and 58 other editions) are now out of print. The remaining paperbound journals are subject to physical degradation.

The committee’s goal is to raise $30,000 for the scanning and digitization of the entire Hilgardia series — more than 31,000 pages.

When these works are digitized, they will be posted here, and become freely available to scholarly and lay readers worldwide.

If you are interested in donating to the Hilgardia Project, please email Dr. Deborah Golino, dagolino@ucdavis.edu.
