Hilgardia ceased publication in 1995, and a limited supply of archival issues remains. California Agriculture now handles requests for back issues and other business items. Please contact Carol Lopez at calag@ucanr.edu

The Hilgardia project is a UC faculty led effort to digitize this invaluable archive.

Portions of Hilgardia may be reprinted for scholarly purposes as long as credit is given to the original publication in Hilgardia, by volume, number and page, and indicating copyright (in the relevant year) by the Regents of the University of California. About us

California Agriculture is a peer-reviewed journal reporting research, reviews and news from the University of California and its  Agriculture and Natural Resources division.

The first issue of California Agriculture was published in December 1946, making it one of the oldest, continuously published, land-grant university research publications in the country. It is also one of the largest circulation publications of its kind (about 15,000 domestic and 1,700 foreign subscribers).

The authors are primarily, but not exclusively, faculty from the University of California. It is currently published quarterly.

Indexing

The journal is indexed by AGRICOLA; Current Contents (Thomson ISI Web of Science, including Agriculture, Biology and Environmental Sciences database, and the SCIE database); Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau (CAB) databases; EBSCO (Academic Search Complete); Elsevier; Gale (Academic OneFile); Proquest; and others, including open-access databases. It has high visibility on Google and Google Scholar searches. All peer-reviewed articles are posted to the ANR and California Digital Library's eScholarship repositories.

Audience

California Agriculture publishes refereed original research, and reviews of the same, in a form accessible to a well-educated audience. In the last readership survey, 33% worked in agriculture, 31% were university faculty or research scientists, and 19% worked in government agencies or were elected office holders.

Letters, comments, and suggestions

The editorial staff of California Agriculture welcomes your letters, comments and suggestions. Include your full name and address. Letters may be edited for space and clarity.

Peer-review policies

All manuscripts submitted for publication in California Agriculture must undergo anonymous peer review before they can be accepted. We forward each submission to the appropriate Associate Editor, who makes an initial determination of its scientific soundness and suitability for California Agriculture's audience. The Associate Editor then nominates at least three qualified reviewers. If the first two reviews are affirmative, the article is accepted. If one is negative, we send the manuscript to a third reviewer. The final decision is made by the Associate Editor in consultation with the Managing and Executive Editors.

Authors, reviewers, rejection rate

Authors are primarily but not exclusively from ANR; in 2010 and 2011, 23% were based at other UC campuses, or other universities and research institutions. In 2010 and 2011, 33% and 40% (respectively) of reviewers came from universities and research institutions or agencies outside ANR.

California Agriculture's rejection rate has averaged 34% in the last 3 years. In addition, associate editors and staff may send back manuscripts for revision prior to peer review. All accepted manuscripts are extensively edited by the California Agriculture staff prior to publication to ensure readability for an audience of lay readers and multidisciplinary academics.
