Not everyone needs Photoshop but they do need basic photo editing software. Often people don't realize they have photo editing software that came with their digital cameras. That software provides cropping, rotation, resizing, color correction, titling and similar features. If you are one of those folks, take a look at the disc that may still be in the box your camera came in.

If you can't find your disc there are some free online options. In this post, I'm focusing on resizing your photos. 

You are encouraged to take photos for work at the highest size and quality (size + quality=resolution) your camera can produced. Those are the files that will be needed for good quality prints. However, when sending photos for people to look at in an email or on a website, you need a lower-resolution photo to function in the lo-rez world of email and websites.

If you want to do more than resize, there are several online sites that will let you upload one or many photos for rotating, resizing or cropping. Here are the steps for http://www.picresize.com.

1. Browse your computer for the image(s) to upload. The file must be JPG, GIF, PNG or BMP file formats.
2. Crop/Rotate. Use as needed.
3. Resize. For most email/web uses, I would recommend the "Fit to screen: 800 pixels wide" setting. 800 is still pretty wide for most webpages with columns and navigation links so you could set your own custom width at 600, or 400, for example, that might fit better.
4. Choose Special Effect. This is not recommended for professional use. In my office, we'll want to see the image unaltered so we can evaluate the image file this lo-rez image represents.
5. Save As JPG and set quality at "Better."  For webpages, PNG is fast becoming the preferred format.
6. Click "I'm Done, Resize My Picture!"
