As an avowed Darwinist I do not subscribe to the Creationist paradigm that if an organism has no direct human use it's not worth anything.

Tanoak is a critical component of the natural forest system providing various habitat elements for a number of vertebrate and invertebrate species.

Can we save it? Nobody can say at this time since history tells us that forest tree pathogens have not been controlled and have "run their course".

I appreciate the need to place economic values on everything that walks, flies, crawls or slithers in a forest to create public awareness but the loss of a critical component of a forest system goes beyond money. In this case the loss of tanoak would add another stress factor to an already multi-stressed forest system.
