Citrus bugs that are bugging us and their management

The cold weather in combination with citrus leafminer damage is causing new flush to turn brown. This mandarin block at LREC has been flushing continously and has been attacked by citrus leafminers for many months. The leafminers will now stop growing and hunker down till winter is over (finally!). We are happy to see that population finally declining.

You can make an argument not to spray young trees for thrips but with leaf miner you better go after them. It will take 5 or 6 sprays to stay on top. As Beth has posted, the damaged leaves dry up and eventually fall off. This leaves you with tress with a bunch of leafless branches.

I have an ongoing study at LREC in this 1 yr old mandarin orchard. We have treated 1/4 of the trees with Admire alone, 1/4 with Admire + 3 foliars, 1/4 with Admire + 5 foliars and 1/4 were left alone. We will be measuring growth and productivity of the trees and see if the treatments make a difference.
